Assemble This: the MALM Desk
IKEA’s MALM desk is great. It’s affordable on a student budget with a simple design, a decent amount of storage, a llarge work space and a filing cabinet. It’s one of IKEA’s most popular items and it’s something we build a lot of when we furnish student housing.
Summary:
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Possible to Do Alone: Defintely
Assembly Time: 60-90 minutes
Parts: about 50
Good for DIY: Definitely
Tips:
You will have 3 identical shorter components. The pre drilled holes will match on 2 sets of them, which should give you an idea of how they’re supposed to orient themselves.
Build this desk upside down to get that center spanning beam installed easily by yourself.
Make sure your drawer tracks are oriented properly. I get lots of people wondering why the drawers won’t slide all the way in, and this is the #1 culprit.
You can adjust how square the door fits with two set screws attached to the door hinges.
Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any issues in the comments.
