TV Mounting - What's a VESA standard?
I encountered the oddest difficulty in a TV mount the other day - a television that wouldn't fit any standard mount. It turns out that this TV was from before the days of VESA!
What is a VESA?
VESA is the Video Electronics Standards Association, and their model allows for... well, standardising video electronics. This includes the back of your TV and makes it very easy to shop around for TV mounts. In modern times, most TVs have the same VESA standards based on the size of the picture, and many mounts will list compatibility with that instead of the much more technical seeming VESA quoted on the product.
VESA standards, also sometimes known as FDMI or MIS, are measured in millimetres. From there it's pretty intuitive, match the number on the tape to the number on the standard.
As for the odd TV? That was a Panasonic model predating FDMI standardisation. However, we managed to find a VESA 700 x 400 to make that one work.
Modern standards make TV mounting easier than ever. Modern units generally have plugs for wall mounted TVs available and conduits for low voltage cables. Modern TVs are incredibly light and have even been installed with drywall anchors. We wouldn't personally reccomend this, but it has been done!
If you need a hand getting your TV mount set up, give us a call at 604 816 7942 or send us an email. We'd be happy to plan your installation, help you hide cables, and reroute power sources as well.
